E-bike and e-scooter laws in New Brunswick

New Brunswick's Motor Vehicle Act doesn't define e-bikes or e-scooters, and the province has said that makes the rules hard to enforce. Moncton allows rental e-scooters by bylaw.

What the law says

New Brunswick’s Motor Vehicle Act has no definition for e-bikes, e-scooters or other personal electric vehicles. In a letter reported by CBC News in 2026, the province said the missing definitions make enforcement impossible. A provincial spokesperson said New Brunswick is reviewing how other provinces handle these vehicles, without saying whether the law will change.

Until the province sets rules, riders are in a grey area. For an e-bike, following bicycle rules, wearing a helmet and staying within 500 W and 32 km/h, the limits most provinces use, is the safest approach.

Moncton

Moncton passed a bylaw in 2026 allowing a rental e-scooter service in the city.

Cities

Municipalities can set rules for their own streets, paths and trails. Check with your city before riding.
