E-bike and e-scooter laws in Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador limits e-bikes to 500 W and 32 km/h with working pedals, and every rider needs a helmet. The Highway Traffic Act doesn't name e-scooters, and the province has consulted on rules for them.

E-bikes

The RCMP in Newfoundland and Labrador says e-bike motors can’t be more powerful than 500 W, with a top speed of 32 km/h. The bike must have fully working pedals, and the motor must stop when the rider stops pedalling.

Everyone riding an e-bike or a bicycle in the province must wear an approved helmet, whatever their age. Riders must follow the Highway Traffic Act, and at night need a white front light and a red rear light or reflector.

E-scooters and other devices

The Highway Traffic Act doesn’t name e-scooters, Onewheels, e-unicycles or e-skateboards. The province has held a public consultation on Highway Traffic Act changes covering e-bikes, e-scooters and other micromobility devices. We’ll update this page when it announces rules.

Cities

Municipalities may have their own rules for paths and trails. Check with your city before riding.
